Real Time Economics/Wall Street Journal reports that the greater failure rate of subcontractors in the construction industry is linked to a lack of skilled workers available for hire.
The short supply of skilled trade workers has been a persistent issue for the construction industry, but the problem becomes more significant when new home and commercial building construction rates increase. When less qualified or experienced laborers/craft workers have to be hired, that can result in work having to be redone and increases in costs. According to the Associated General Contractors, the most needed but hardest to hire workers are carpenters, sheet metal installers and concrete workers.
