Construction Nightmares: Stories from the Crypt

During one of the presentations at the Construction Management Association of America's National Conference & Trade Show in early October, five men arrived on stage carrying copies of “Tales from the Crypt.” So reports Construction Dive.

The men had horror stories to share, true stories stemming from lessons they had learned from decades working in the industry. Some stories had a 'humorous angle' to them.

Take, for example, the young boys visiting a museum who realized that standing below the glass staircase was “prime real estate” for catching a glimpse of what lies beneath a lady’s dress. The museum curators didn’t find that so funny.

Lesson learned: Know how who you are designing for and put yourself in the shoes of the people who will live, work, and use what you build.

In another tale, a ‘starchitect’ was hired to design a federal courthouse on Long Island. Construction managers advised for features that would help ensure water-tight design of the structure, which this famous architect scoffed at. The decision-makers sided with the architect only to have a building that leaked from day one
