Virtual Reality Tools Allow AEC Teams to Simulate, Showcase Final Projects

Architecture, Engineering and Construction teams are using augmented reality devices to show clients interactive, rendered views of projects before they are completed. So reports BDC Network.

The technology was used back in 2009 to provide simulated game-day experiences of the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. Today, gaming engines are used to immerse end users and construction team members in detailed simulations of a final structure.

The technology has been used by Gilbane Building Company to create a physical mockup of an intricately conceived and tough-to-build spiral staircase that was part of a 3-building high-tech biotech facility with an atrium in Cambridge, MA.

Augmented reality was also used during renovation of the 85,000 sf main hospital building in the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System. The renovation required keeping the hospital open while adding 18 new operating rooms, an MRI suite, a pre-and post-operative care unit, and new reception area. This project used the Oculus Rift technology to generate photorealistic work environments that would address questions about lighting, use of space, safety, and to educate hospital personnel about the renovation process.
