Workers Construction ranks ninth among the occupations with the highest suicide risk.
The reasons that contribute to the high rate of mental health issues for construction workers include the physical demands of the work and dealing with the stress of seasonal employment combined with a lack of mental health care access in an industry known for having the "tough-guy.”
In response to the risk, a guidebook on suicide prevention has been developed specifically for construction executives: "A Construction Industry Blueprint: Suicide Prevention in the Workplace." It is joint venture of the Carson J. Spencer Foundation, along with RK Mechanical and the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention.
The guidebook helps contractors prioritize mental health issues in the workplace and teaches them how to use positive messages to open discussion of sensitive topics.
