A construction worker has died after a fall into a smokestack at the site of Yale University’s power plant in New Haven, CT. So reports the New Haven Register.
The worker had entered the chimney from the top while other crew were working from an access point at the base. Firefighters on scene had a technically difficult rescue mission as the only way to access the worker who fell was through the lower access point and after cutting through a stainless steel liner.
The man, whose name has not been released, was in cardiac arrest when the fireman reached him; he died at Yale New Haven-Hospital. An OSHA investigation is still in progress.
Along with employers who have crew entering confined spacers (“entry employers”), the new requirement impacts the "controlling contractor" at a construction site (usually the general contractor) and the entity that owns or operates the property (known as the "host employer").
