Home Performance contracting (HPC) is all about making existing homes more comfortable, safer, healthier, more durable, and energy efficient. Whether or not you should be offering these services from your existing business model depends upon a lot of factors. So advises HPC Business Development Guide.
The foundation of HPC is the ability to use proven building science to asses the whole--and how systems already interact and how changing those systems will enhance the way they interact.
This includes an assessment of the flow of energy, heat, air, and moisture, within a home and having the expertise and resources to produce an indoor environment that will meet the customer’s expectation. Of the many factors you’ll need to consider before you venture into this market are:
- The capacity of your existing business to handle this type of work
- The expertise of your staff or the need to hire new professionals
- The types of construction projects you already manage and whether adding HPC services enhances or detracts from your current products and services.
Not the least of these factors is whether or not, in your market, you have customers who want these services and you can put a price on the scope of the work you will offer them. As with any other aspect of business, you’ll need to consider legal and other contractual obligations specifically for HPC services.
