Two days before the horrific fatal pedestrian bridge collapse in Florida, a lead engineer for the bridge warned state officials that he witnessed “some cracking” on the structure, but did not consider it an immediate danger. So reports The Washington Post.

The engineer, employed by private contractor FIGG, left the warning on the voicemail of a state transportation official. The official, however, was out of the office and did not receive the message until Friday.

On the voicemail, the engineer said he observed some cracking “on the north end of the span, the pylon end of that span we moved this weekend” but that while it obviously needed some repairs, he’s “not concerned about it from (a safety) perspective although obviously the cracking is not good and something’s going to have to be, ya know, done to repair that.” As of Friday night, there were six confirmed fatalities from the collapse, although officials note that number could climb.
