The 2016 Summer Olympics got off to a lackluster start, by many accounts, not the least of which has been concerns among fans and athletes over health and safety. So reports the Chicago Monitor.

As previously noted, Rio has been plagued with construction issues at the Olympic village, including concerns over sanitation, public health, environmental safekeeping, and structural integrity. The city’s waterways are filled with pathogens, raw sewage flows into storm drains, and viruses, including Zika, have been detected. In the athlete’s villages, some apartments are without hot water, have exposed wiring, faulty plumbing, and a host of other poor construction issues.
