100 Days Until Opening Ceremonies at Rio de Janeiro Olympic Stadium

In about 100 days, the Games of the XXXI Olympiad will get underway at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Maracanã Stadium has been transformed from its original concept build in 1950 as a World Cup venue to a modern sports, culture and leisure complex to hold nearly 75,000 spectators. In total, there are 18 existing venues (eight of which were redeveloped), 9 new venues constructed specifically for the Summer Games, and 7 temporary venues that will be taken down following the games.

A focus was placed on resourceful and integrated design, using as much existing architecture as possible and mirroring the natural beauty of Brazil. The venues will be interconnected by flowing pathways, intended to remind spectators (and folks watching from home) of the great Amazon River.

Architects and athletes have been testing venues for performance and functionality (sound, safety, etc.) since. The Rio 2016 Olympic Park was designed by the same architects who created the now iconic London 2012 Park.
