From Army Barracks to a Net-Zero Farmhouse Neighborhood

This Old House, the beloved home magazine, revealed its “2016 Idea House” in the September 2016 issue.

A highly efficient update on the traditional farmhouse is in the build phase on a decommissioned army base at Emerson Green in Devens, MA. At 1900 sq. ft., the farmhouse will average less than half the energy usage of a similarly sized home.

A representation of the homes being built here, the farmhouse features an open, casual interior layout and the charm of homes of an era past. The home provides modern green living, including photovoltaic arrays and solar power among other “small footprint” features.

Emerson Green is intended for mixed-use, net-zero possible living in a walkable neighborhood marked by traditional architecture.
