The survey results were presented by Kyle Zimmer, Labor Assistance Professional at the Connecticut Construction Industries Association (CCIA) 3rd annual Safety Alliance Conference. The local survey reflects data that has previously been reported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s study on substance use and abuse in U.S. industries.
Heavy alcohol use was prominent among mining and construction workers. The reports detail the complex factors that contribute to construction workers’ levels of stress and susceptibility to addictions. Failure to properly manage these issues puts workers at risk for job-related accidents and injuries, which increases company costs. EAPs are only one option for assisting workers with these lifestyle issues. Peer support programs are recommended.
