A groundbreaking ceremony was held October 6, 2016 at the site of the new, 26,000 square foot Statute of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in NY Harbor. So reports New Jersey Business Magazine.

Phelps Construction is managing the project in collaboration with The Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation, Inc. (SOLEIF) and the National Park Service. With a focus on efficient and eco-conscious design, the sustainable building will feature a first floor above the 500-year flood level and will be able to withstand hurricane force winds.

The exterior will feature an expansive green roof that will include native vegetation. ESI Design is overseeing interior construction including an immersive theater, engagement gallery and an inspiration gallery.
